Module 1: Introduction to Coatings

Introduction to Coatings is a beginner-friendly course designed for anyone interested in exploring the world of coatings—no prior experience required. This module offers a concise yet comprehensive overview of the coatings industry, covering topics such as the history of paint and coatings, the fundamentals of modern coating science, and the various ways coatings are classified.

Participants will gain insight into how coatings function, including the key differences between organic and inorganic coatings. The course also answers the question “What is paint?” from a technical perspective, breaking down the components of paint and explaining the role each one plays.

In addition, learners will explore the coatings market, common specifications, and potential career paths within the industry. Delivered asynchronously, the course includes helpful resources, a glossary of key terms, and access to tools that support a self-paced learning experience.

Designed to be completed in approximately 30 minutes, Introduction to Coatings lays the foundation for future learning through the Coatings Academy. Upon completion, participants will receive a certificate recognizing their achievement.

Introduction to Coatings teaches the foundational history and concepts of paint and coatings to set you on a pathways for success in other educational courses.

Requirements

To earn a certificate of completion, participants must complete all sections of the course and attain a final mark of 70% or higher on the Knowledge Test. The Knowledge Test consists of 10 questions.

Introduction to Coatings is a general course and not a prerequisite for any other e-learning modules.
