Module 7: Waterborne Resins in Coatings
Waterborne Resins in Coatings is an intermediate-level module designed to expand learners’ understanding of one of the most important and rapidly evolving technologies in the coatings industry. Building on previous modules that introduced resin fundamentals and solvent-based systems, this course focuses on the chemistry, structure, and performance of waterborne resins and emulsions (latices), which serve as the foundation of modern environmentally responsible coatings.
Learners will explore how waterborne technologies have developed in response to regulatory pressures to reduce volatile organic compounds (VOC), as well as the industry’s transition toward safer, more sustainable, and low-toxicity raw materials. The module highlights how water has replaced traditional hydrocarbon solvents in many applications, offering advantages such as improved safety, easier cleanup, and reduced environmental impact.
Delivered asynchronously, this module is designed for approximately 30–40 minutes of self-paced learning. Supporting diagrams, chemical structures, and formulation tables reinforce key concepts, while an end-of-module exam ensures comprehension of waterborne resin technologies and their practical applications.
Upon completion, participants will receive a Certificate of Achievement, recognizing their understanding of waterborne resins and emulsions—an essential step in developing advanced formulation expertise within the Coatings Academy program.

Waterborne Resins in Coatings is an intermediate-level module exploring the chemistry, structure, and performance of waterborne resins and emulsions used in modern, environmentally responsible coatings.

Requirements
To earn a certificate of completion, participants must complete all sections of the course and attain a final mark of 70% or higher on the Knowledge Test. The Knowledge Test consists of 10 questions.
Solvents is an intermediate course and not a prerequisite for any other e-learning modules. If you do not have any formal training in chemistry consider this course as a starting point to all other modules.
