Module 8: Solvents in Coatings

Solvents in Coatings is an intermediate-level module designed to deepen learners’ understanding of one of the most essential components in paint formulation: solvents. Building on previous modules that introduced basic organic chemistry and coating composition, this course focuses on the chemistry, classification, properties, and functional roles of solvents in coatings systems.

Learners will explore how solvents act as carriers, viscosity reducers, and performance modifiers within liquid coatings. The module examines traditional hydrocarbon solvents alongside oxygenated solvents such as alcohols, ketones, esters, and glycol ethers, highlighting their influence on solubility, evaporation rate, film formation, and application properties. Emphasis is placed on how solvent selection directly impacts coating performance, including flow, leveling, drying time, adhesion, and final film appearance.

Delivered asynchronously, this module is designed for approximately 30–40 minutes of self-paced learning. Supporting diagrams, property charts, and formulation examples reinforce key concepts, while an end-of-module exam ensures comprehension of solvent selection and performance in coatings applications.

Upon completion, participants will receive a Certificate of Achievement, recognizing their understanding of solvent technologies—an essential component in developing advanced formulation expertise within the Coatings Academy program.
