Module 10: White and Extender Pigments

White and Extender Pigments is an intermediate-level module designed to deepen learners' understanding of the pigments responsible for opacity, brightness, cost optimization, and functional performance in paint and coating formulations. Building on previous modules covering pigments, resins, solvents, and additives, this course focuses on the chemistry, properties, classification, and practical applications of white and extender pigments used across architectural, industrial, and specialty coatings.

Learners will explore how white pigments provide hiding power, whiteness, and brightness, while extender pigments improve mechanical properties, control gloss, optimize pigment volume concentration (PVC), and reduce formulation costs. The module examines the chemistry and performance of titanium dioxide, the industry's most important white pigment—as well as the physical and functional characteristics of commonly used mineral and synthetic extender pigments, including calcium carbonate, talc, kaolin clay, silica, mica, wollastonite, barium sulfate, and precipitated silica.

Delivered asynchronously, this module is designed for approximately 35–45 minutes of self-paced learning. Supporting pigment comparison tables, particle structure illustrations, formulation examples, and performance charts reinforce technical understanding while connecting pigment selection to real-world coating applications. A final knowledge assessment ensures learners can identify white and extender pigment types, explain their functional roles, and select appropriate pigments based on formulation and performance requirements.

Upon completion, participants will receive a Certificate of Achievement, recognizing their understanding of white and extender pigment technologies as essential components for optimizing coating performance, appearance, durability, and formulation efficiency within the Coatings Academy program.

Requirements

To earn a certificate of completion, participants must complete all sections of the course and attain a final mark of 70% or higher on the Knowledge Test. The Knowledge Test consists of 10 questions.

White and Extender Pigments provides foundational knowledge about pigments used in coatings. It is highly recommended to complete this module before Modules 11 and 12. If you do not have formal training in pigments, consider this course as a starting point for exploring the pigments industry.
