Module 12: Black, Iron Oxide & Functional Pigments

Black, Iron Oxide & Functional Pigments is an intermediate-level module designed to deepen learners’ understanding of inorganic and functional pigments that provide color, protection, durability, and specialized performance in paint and coating formulations. Building on previous modules covering pigment fundamentals, white and extender pigments, organic pigments, resins, solvents, and additives, this course focuses on the chemistry, classification, properties, and practical applications of black, iron oxide, corrosion-inhibitive, aluminum, and pearlescent pigments across architectural, industrial, automotive, marine, and specialty coatings.

Learners will explore the characteristics and applications of carbon black and iron oxide pigments, including how particle size, structure, crystal form, and oxidation state influence color, tinting strength, opacity, dispersion, durability, and other coating properties. The module examines natural and synthetic iron oxides, including hematite, goethite, and magnetite, as well as micaceous and transparent iron oxides, highlighting their unique performance characteristics and applications.
Special emphasis is placed on functional pigments used to protect substrates and enhance coating performance.

Delivered asynchronously, this module is designed for approximately 35–45 minutes of self-paced learning. Supporting pigment comparison tables, particle and crystal structure illustrations, corrosion-protection diagrams, metallic and pearlescent effect examples, and coating application examples reinforce technical understanding while connecting pigment chemistry and morphology to real-world formulation decisions. A final knowledge assessment ensures learners can identify major black, iron oxide, and functional pigment types, explain their performance characteristics and mechanisms, and select appropriate pigments based on color, protection, appearance, and application requirements.

Upon completion, participants will receive a Certificate of Achievement, recognizing their understanding of black, iron oxide, and functional pigment technologies as essential components for achieving color performance, corrosion protection, specialized visual effects, durability, and formulation optimization within the Coatings Academy program.

Career Options

Black, Iron Oxide & Functional Pigments introduces learners to pigment technologies used across architectural, automotive, industrial, protective, and specialty coatings. The knowledge gained can support career opportunities in coatings formulation, technical service, quality control, pigment manufacturing, product development, and applications support.

Requirements

To earn a certificate of completion, participants must complete all sections of the course and attain a final mark of 70% or higher on the Knowledge Test. The Knowledge Test consists of 10 questions.

Black, Iron Oxide & Functional Pigments provides foundational knowledge about pigments used in coatings. It is highly recommended that Module 10 be taken before Modules 11 & 12, as it covers the important basic information regarding the pigments in coatings.
