Additives is an intermediate-to-advanced level module designed to deepen learners’ understanding of the critical role additives play in modern paint and coating formulations. Building on previous modules covering resins, pigments, and formulation fundamentals, this course focuses on the chemistry, function, selection, and performance optimization of specialty additives that enhance processing, stability, application, appearance, durability, and regulatory compliance across a wide range of coating systems.

Learners will explore how additives—though often used in small quantities—have an outsized influence on coating performance. The module examines traditional and emerging additive technologies including siccatives (driers), anti-skinning agents, antimicrobials, surfactants, dispersants, wetting agents, foam control technologies, and rheology modifiers. Particular emphasis is placed on how these materials function chemically and physically within solventborne, waterborne, and high-solids systems to address challenges such as oxidative curing, microbial spoilage, pigment stabilization, sag resistance, and manufacturing efficiency.

Delivered asynchronously, this module is designed for approximately 35–45 minutes of self-paced learning. Supporting formulation tables, additive classification charts, rheology comparisons, and performance diagrams reinforce technical understanding while connecting theory to practical coatings applications. A final knowledge assessment ensures learners can identify additive categories, explain their mechanisms, and apply additive strategies to optimize coating formulations.

Upon completion, participants will receive a Certificate of Achievement, recognizing their understanding of additive technologies as essential tools for advanced coatings formulation, performance enhancement, and sustainable product development within the Coatings Academy program.
