Module 3: Oils, Varnishes, Natural Resins and Alkyds

Oils, Varnishes, Natural Resins, and Alkyds in Coatings Formulation is an essential module for learners as it covers the fundamentals of raw materials used in paint and coatings formulation. This course provides a concise yet comprehensive overview of natural and synthetic materials central to coatings formulation, including essential oils, drying oils, natural resins, varnishes, and alkyd resins. Participants will explore the chemistry, performance characteristics, and functional roles of these raw materials within coating systems.

The module traces the historical evolution of coating technologies—from the early use of drying oils such as linseed and tung, to the development of alkyd polyesters. It also examines the industry’s shift from traditional solventborne alkyds to modern waterborne systems driven by environmental and regulatory advancements.

Learners will gain insight into new water-based alkyd dispersion technologies used in direct-to-metal (DTM) applications and the integration of bio-renewable materials that contribute to more sustainable coatings. Practical formulation examples are provided to reinforce key concepts and illustrate real-world applications.

Delivered asynchronously, this 30-minute module includes supporting resources, formulation references, and a glossary of key terms to enhance self-paced learning.

Upon completion, participants will receive a Certificate of Achievement, signifying foundational knowledge of coating raw materials—an essential step toward more advanced studies within the Coatings Academy.

Designed to be completed in approximately 30 minutes, this module lays the groundwork for a deeper understanding of raw materials in the context of today's coatings industry.
