Module 4: Polyester, Vinyl, and Amino Resins

Resins and Polymers in Coatings Formulation is an intermediate-level module designed to deepen understanding of the essential film-forming components that define a coating’s performance. Building on foundational coatings knowledge, this course focuses on the chemistry, structure, and function of polymers and resins within paint formulations.

Learners will explore how the physical and chemical properties of resins—such as hardness, strength, adhesion, and durability—directly influence the performance of the final coating. The module examines how polymer selection and curing mechanisms can impact overall product performance, including resistance to chemicals, weathering, and wear.

Participants will gain insight into polymer structure and formation, learning how monomers combine to form macromolecules, and how variations in monomer type or ratio create distinct resin families such as alkyds, polyesters, vinyls, amino resins, and epoxies. The course also clarifies key formulation terminology, including vehicle and binder, and explains their role in pigment dispersion and film formation.

The module concludes with a look at emerging nanomaterial technologies and their applications in modern resin systems, particularly within polyester, vinyl, and amino resin formulations.

Delivered asynchronously, this module is designed to be completed in approximately 30 minutes and includes supporting resources and a glossary of key terms for self-paced learning.

Upon completion, participants will receive a Certificate of Achievement, recognizing their foundational understanding of polymers and resins—an essential building block for advanced studies within the Coatings Academy.
